The Quintessential Anarkali

Anarkali , one of the most popular Indian Ensembles which literally translates to the Pomegranate flower bud , primarily because of the A shaped panels used in its construction.

Anarkali dresses owe their name to Anarkali, a famous courtesan in the court of a great mughal emperor. The story of Anarkali was immortalized because of her affair with the emperor's son that ended in tragedy when Anarkali was buried alive behind a wall. She was a legendary slave girl from Lahore, Punjab.

Anarkali is largely inspired from the court costumes of Mughal Era with a fitted bodice and flared skirt made from A shaped panels attached to it at the empire line joint , usually adorned with precious stones and gold hand embroidery. Anarkali is conventionally made using Indian weaves like Brocade , Silk , Chanderi , Cotton etc.

Anarkali is usually worn with churidaar pants (Traditional Indian Drop Crotch pants with bangle like gathers at the bottom) and a Dupatta ,Traditional Indian Stole. Alternately it can be styled as an outerwear jacket (in its open front version) with  bohemian pants and Tunic/Blouse or it can be worn as a full length Maxi Dress as well.
I love the Anarkali Silhouette and especially when the silhouette shifts/differs with the use of different fabrics.

Rs 30,00,000 Only, for a dress

Different sized ruby red crystals, painstakingly hand applied onto lace make for a show stopping outfit, a corner stone of the Dolce&Gabbana Fall Winter 2014 fashion show collection- one that costs like building materials for a kitchen extension- if we want to continue down the road of the masonry extended metaphor.

Net-a-Porter, fearless luxury online fashion pioneers have gone a step further in challenging perceptions of online retail by ordering six of these beautifully crafted dresses, with an exorbitant price tag.
The Guardian picked up on these news and immediately interviewed Ben Matthews, Net-a-Porter's buying manager: “If we have women in mind for a particular piece then we will go for it and with conviction too. This Dolce & Gabbana dress has been produced in limited quantities and we have bought half of the world's stock," he says.

Notwithstanding the crisis, the luxury online retailer has been raking it in, literally, so I guess they know their business and its time that us too come to realize that gone are the days when online shopping was restricted to buying books off Amazon at slightly discounted prices.
And with a $50,000 price tag, I assure you ; the shipping will not be free.
